CBD and Headaches

There’s not an enormous amount of things that are universal to the human experience, but headaches certainly is one of them. Hunting for relief from chronic headaches is something most of us can relate to at some time or other. Relying on painkillers can be damaging though, especially if the pain is enough to warrant taking opioids. The increasing availability of CBD and CBD products might be the answer people are looking for.

To understand how CBD can help with headaches, you must first understand what a headache actually is. Headaches are classified into two separate categories: tension headaches and migraines. A tension headache is the more common of the two, often time manifesting as a dull pain in the temples that can spread to pressure behind the eyes or soreness in the face, neck, or shoulders. The frustrating truth of tension headaches is that they can be caused by a multitude of sources including not enough sleep, dehydration, poor posture, loud noises, and more. Migraines are much more difficult to deal with. Their symptoms are much more severe and include severe pain, light sensitivity, and even nausea and vomiting. Migraines also tend to last much longer than headaches, often sticking around for days. Also unfortunately, the cause of migraines is much harder to pin down. It is believed that the factors that induce them have to do primarily with environmental or genetic issues. Those factors can include a great many things like age, sex, stress levels, and even family history.

With these pains being so prolific, it is no wonder people have searched for relief in any place they can. Unfortunately, the current solution often comes in the form of pharmaceuticals. Over the counter painkillers can be fine in moderation, but if you suffer from chronic headaches and migraines and you have to take them often you run the risk of damaging your liver, stomach, and kidneys. More powerful drugs can be even more dangerous as opiods are highly addictive and it is frighteningly easy to overdose on them.

This is where CBD comes in. CBD, or cannabidiol, is the primary non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant. One of the primary benefits of CBD is pain relief, and so people have been turning to it for relief from chronic pains like headaches and migraines. CBD works to achieve this pain relief in two ways. The first is the activation of the endocannabinoid system. When CBD interacts with this system, it interacts with a neural receptor known as CB2, which controls swelling throughout the body. Oftentimes headaches can be caused by swelling for one reason or another so this can provide the relief people are searching for. The other way in which CBD helps has more to do with migraines. No matter the source, most migraines can be traces in some way to an imbalance in the brain’s chemistry. CBD helps to regulate and normalize your neuroreceptors and through that can reduce the duration and even halt migraines before they start in some cases.

With the world as reliant on pharmaceuticals as it is, it is good to find other options slowly begin to appear. CBD is a far healthy alternative to opiods and even a better option for the long term than over the counter painkillers. If you deal with chronic headaches or migraines, or even just are looking for a new option, CBD may be the answer for you.
