CBD and Athletes
The common narrative around CBD lately has been that it is primarily beneficial for those suffering from serious conditions like chronic pain or acute anxiety. That could not be farther from the truth. CBD can be enormously beneficial to anyone, from those searching for relief from symptoms of their conditions, to people who are perfectly healthy and looking to improve their body’s natural functions. Athletes in particular put a great deal of strain on their body to be active at the levels they require, and CBD can be a great option to improve the process by which they get stronger and improve.
The first question a lot of competitive athletes ask when questioning CBD is, is it legal for them to take? CBD was famously legalized at the federal level in 2018 in the United States so there will be no issues with the law, but what about rules of the professional world? Thankfully, most of the governing boards that oversee substance use by athletes have recognized the benefits of CBD and have allowed it for use. These organizations include the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). One thing to keep in mind is that it was very specifically cannabidiol, or CBD, that was allowed. This means that THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, is still prohibited so it is important to get your CBD from a reliable source, free of THC.
With that question out of the way, it is important to then consider how CBD can benefit athletes. The most obvious and outwardly beneficial effect of CBD for athletes is that it acts as a pain reliever. No matter how strong an athlete becomes, there will always be aches and pains, especially after a long workout. The dominating forces in pain relief at the moment are NSAIDs, or anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and the much stronger category of opioids. Hundreds of athletes rely on these drugs and it could be enormously damaging in the long run. NSAIDs can lead to heart and liver failure while opioids, which are highly addictive, have been linked to the deaths of over 43,000 people in the last year alone. CBD might not be nearly as powerful as opioids, but it can act as a fantastic pain reliever and, as a bonus, it is completely non-addictive and it is nigh impossible to overdose on it.
The other benefits CBD provides are less obvious, but no less important. Aside from generally dulling aches and pains, CBD goes to the root of many problems and lessens inflammation. Inflammation is the source of many issues with athletes as it slows recovery and hinders performance. With consistent CBD, this issue all but disappears. CBD can also help with an upset stomach. Many long distance runners deal with gut problems when on the track and CBD can help settle that, allowing you to go even farther than before. CBD has also been shown to aid in sleep quality, which can be enormously helpful any time, and especially the night before a big game or event.
More and more research comes out about CBD every day, and all of it points to the benefits it can provide to people. It can reduce pain and swelling, eliminate the need for stronger and more dangerous substances, and even give peace of mind to things like upset stomach and trouble sleeping. It’s time to take your game to the next level with CBD!
