CBD and Alcohol
By now, you’ve probably heard about the amazing new health craze that is Cannabidiol, or CBD. Claims have been made for its ability to aid in sleep, all the way in how it can help those struggling with mental illness. Now, people are starting to wonder how else they can incorporate it into their lives. It is common among users to add it to their food and certain drinks, like smoothies. With this in mind, it was only a matter of time before people added it to their alcoholic beverages. This trend has already begun, but the question is, how do the two substances interact with each other?
While just about everyone understands alcohol and its effects, knowledge about CBD is slightly less common. At its base, CBD is the primary non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant. This means that the usual mental high associated with marijuana is absent, leaving only the physical health benefits. Studies have shown that CBD helps the body in a multitude of ways including sleep aid, muscle relaxant, and pain management.
The question stands though, how do CBD and alcohol interact? While human studies have begun rather recently, early testing has revealed positive results. When drinking alcohol, the amount within your body can be easily measured in BAC, or Blood Alcohol Concentration. As this number grows, the more obvious the loss of cognitive function and motor control one will experience. It has been found that when taking CBD, this number will be significantly reduced, thus lowering the risks of over-consumption. Put simply, this means if you take CBD before or with your alcohol, studies show that it may lessen the effects of the alcohol in your system.
Another interesting way in which studies have shown CBD interacting with alcohol is how alcohol affects one’s liver. As many know, drinking too much can lead to damaged cells, inflammation, and disease in various organs including the pancreas, liver, and even the brain. Because CBD has been found to be both an anti-inflammatory agent as well as a compound that promotes cell growth, studies have shown that taking CBD in conjunction with alcohol can protect your body from some of its potentially damaging effects.
One final way in which alcohol and CBD can interact is in those suffering from alcohol dependency. Those who suffer from this disease often times will find it difficult to wean themselves off as the toll it takes on both the body and mind can be intense. There are certain medications that can help, but strong pharmaceuticals can sometimes be just as dangerous, if not more so, that the substances these drugs are helping treat. Thankfully, CBD may be a possible solution to that problem. Researchers have found that CBD can reduce the symptoms of alcohol dependence and withdrawal. It can also help with relapse as the calming effects of CBD have been found to have help those suffering keep their urges in check.
Even with studies in their early stages, the early findings of those who take CBD in conjunction with alcohol have been very positive. From protecting yourself from the more dangerous sides of drinking, to making sure you are drinking responsibly, CBD, at this stage, seems to only provide positives to the experience.
